PMU PRE- AND AFTERCARE

In order to achieve the best and safest results with semi-permanent make-up, we have strict pre- and aftercare instructions. These instructions have been approved by the government and the Municipal Health Service (GGD). It is important that you follow these instructions carefully.

RISKS OF SEMI-PERMANENT MAKE-UP

Semi-permanent make-up involves risks, so you must ensure that you are well rested and have eaten enough before you undergo the treatment. Inform the PMU expert if you use medication or have skin problems, allergies, epilepsy, and hypersensitivity reactions. We have a Municipal Health Service (GGD) license, which means we are a safe PMU studio. This license is only granted to studios and clinics that operate according to strict government hygiene guidelines.

WHEN SHOULDN’T YOU HAVE SEMI-PERMANENT MAKEUP APPLIED?

Semi-permanent make-up is not suitable for everyone. Do not have semi-permanent make-up applied:

  • on areas where you have had plastic surgery or radiation therapy in the past year.
  • on scars that are less than a year old.
  • on areas where PMU was applied less than six weeks ago.
  • on areas where PMU or a tattoo was lasered off less than three months ago or where the laser wound hasn’t yet healed.
  • on irritated skin such as bumps, dark moles, or swelling.
  • if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • if you are pregnant.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS PMU

We also advise against having semi-permanent make-up applied if you suffer from any of the following conditions:

  • Diabetes
  • Hemophilia
  • Chronic skin disease
  • Allergic to pigments or other materials used to make and apply PMU
  • Immune disorders
  • Cardiovascular disorders

Do you have one of these conditions or are you taking anticoagulants or antibiotics? And do you still want PMU? Please first discuss the possibilities with your doctor.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A PMU TREATMENT

At Amsterdam Cosmetic Clinic, we follow strict hygienic procedures. We always ensure that:

  • the skin is cleaned, disinfected and, if necessary, shaved using a new disposable razor before applying PMU.
  • the needles and ink are packaged in sterile packaging and are only used for you. The needles are packed individually;
  • the ink comes in small ink cups.
  • clean tissues are used to clean the skin when applying PMU.
  • the therapist wears gloves while applying PMU and replaces them if they touch anything other than the pen used to apply the pigment, a tissue, or your skin.
  • the permanent make-up is cared for afterwards.

AFTERCARE

New semi-permanent make-up is very much like a graze. Poor care and inadequate hygiene practices during treatment can lead to infections in the wound and the development of scar tissue. Wound infections can also lead to less beautiful PMU results. If you take good care of the PMU, the treated skin will take two to six weeks to heal. After the treatment, we also provide you with clear aftercare instructions which you should read and follow carefully in order to achieve the best possible result.

For an optimal result, you should adhere to the following instructions in the first six weeks after the treatment:

  • Wash the permanent make-up twice a day with a mild, unscented soap.
  • After washing, pat the permanent make-up dry using a clean towel.
  • Apply the cream that we gave you to the treated skin.

During the healing process, also make sure that you:

  • touch the treated skin as little as possible and wash your hands first before caring for your skin.
  • do not scratch the treated skin.
  • do not cover the PMU with tight or dirty clothing.
  • do not cover the treated skin with plasters or bandages.
  • avoid baths (including bubble baths), swimming pools, saunas, and steam baths.
  • do not expose the treated skin to sunlight or the sunbed.

The treated skin will remain very sensitive to sunlight even after it has recovered. Always apply sun protection with at least SPF 30 to your PMU.

Attention: Contact your doctor in the event of extreme redness, swelling, bleeding, wound fluid, color change, or chronic pain.
